Stephen Alan Spongberg was born October 15, 1942 in Rockford, Illinois. He received a Ph. D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1971. Dr. Spongberg began working at the Arnold Arboretum in 1970 in the position of assistant curator, working on the Generic Flora of the Southeastern United States project as a postdoctoral graduate. Botanical expedition to China funded by Academia Siniica. Five American botanists, Bruce Bartholomew, David E. Boufford, Theodore R. Dudley, James L. Luteyn and Stephen A. Spongberg, participated during August to November, 1980. The expedition collected 2085 numbers, of which 1715 were vascular plants.
